General Description of PACES:
PACES is a UK based charity established in 2006, with the aim of providing healthy, structured after-school sports programs for Palestinian girls and boys ages 6-16 years living in refugee camps and most marginalized areas in Palestine, Jordan, and Lebanon. Through its core sports for development program, PACES provides children with multiple educational benefits to help them thrive in their own communities. PACES also builds local capacity by training and hiring leaders in the local communities as coaches to deliver the sports program, and partnering with local clubs and sports centers to facilitate the outreach and delivery of the program.
Since establishment, PACES has served over 35,000 children, 2,350 young female and male coaches, and over 200 local sports clubs. PACES’ program promotes gender equality, and has successfully reached and maintained a 50% female participation rate.
Power of Play Project: Building Confidence and Combating Stigma Through Wheelchair Basketball
This project combines wheelchair basketball with a comprehensive social peace and parental support program to enhance the physical and mental well-being, confidence, and social inclusion of 40 vulnerable refugee children and youth with disabilities, representing two groups, in the Beddawi and Nahr el Bared refugee camps in North Lebanon.
The project directly addresses the significant gap in inclusive sports opportunities and the need for stronger parental and community support to challenge stigma and foster a supportive environment. The integrated approach leverages sports for development and community-led peacebuilding to create lasting positive change.
General Description of the Role:
The Project Coordinator (volunteer role) will act as the main coordinator for the Power of Play project in Beddawi and Nahr el Bared camps between PACES and TDSA. The role involves supporting the implementation and follow up of the project activities, assisting the coaching team with logistics and technical needs, and ensuring the program is delivered in line with PACES’ curriculum and project goals.
The Project Coordinator should be a resident in or near the project area to carry our regular field visits, and should have a technical and coaching background in basketball or wheelchair basketball.
The Coordinator will report directly to PACES Country Manager.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Coordinate the logistics of the wheelchair basketball training sessions over the project implementation period. Support TDSA’s outreach to children and youth to participate in the project, ensuring 50% female participation.
- Collect all maintain documents for project participants including consent forms and participants IDs.
- Ensure all wheelchair basketball sessions are implemented consistently in accordance with the project work plan and PACES’ guidelines.
- Facilitate the distribution of purchased sports equipment and uniforms for participating groups..
- Provide direct on-field technical supervision to the 4 TDSA coaches (2 head, 2 assistants).
- Monitor the implementation of the technical wheelchair basketball skills and life skills in sports training sessions as per the program plan..
- Monitor the progress of coaches, children and youth participants and provide feedback and support when necessary..
- Serve as the key point of reference for the coaches and local partner.
- Submit periodic report to the Country Manager highlighting project progress.
- Collect data and reports from coaches regarding project activities including attendance sheets and others
- Assist in data collection for monitoring and evaluation activities
- Any other documentation as required.
Requirements:
- Coaching experience in basketball, experience in wheelchair basketball is highly preferred
- Experience in sports for development sector and incorporating life skills into sports for children and youth.
- Familiarity with the local context in North Lebanon.
- Experience working with refugee communities and/or children and youth with disabilities/special needs.
- Proven experience in administrative support and project coordination
- Excellent communication skills in both Arabic and English (written and spoken) are Must be a resident in or near the project area (North Lebanon).
